Chika the meerkat's silhouette on a lovely, warm April evening. She was keeping an eye on a huge flock of cockatoos overhead and was crouching down rather timidly at the enormity (and noisiness) of the big white birds. Over time meerkats learn which aerial activists are dangerous and which are not. In the wild species such as eagles, owls, goshawks, buzzards, kites and falcons pose a threat. Even vultures are sometimes treated with caution. Down here in South Australia there are different birds to keep the meerkats on their toes, ranging from wedge-tailed eagles to wandering peafowls!
